About

This course is the RLSS UK National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches (NRASTC), Seventh Edition.

The NRASTC is a supervision and rescue qualification designed for swimming teachers, coaches, and instructors working during programmed aquatic sessions such as swimming lessons. It is suitable for pools where the water may be deeper than standing height and where the venue risk assessment requires a safety-trained responder.

Who benefits: Swimming teachers, assistant teachers, swim coaches, aqua-aerobics instructors, school staff supporting swimming lessons, club volunteers, and private aquatic instructors who supervise or assist structured water-based sessions.

Entry Requirements

• 16+ on the final day of the course
• Swim 50m on front and back
• Confident in deep water
• Surface-dive to the deepest part of the pool (1.85 m at this venue)
• Tread water for 30 seconds
• Climb out unaided (where venue design permits)

Course Content

• The role of the teacher and safe supervision
• Pool and class management
• Intervention & rescue techniques
• Emergency action plans
• Emergency First Aid and CPR
• Practical pool-based training and theory elements

Assessment

To qualify, candidates must successfully complete:

• A practical assessment
• A theory assessment
• Demonstration of all required water-based skills

• Awarding body: Royal Life Saving Society UK
• Scheme: National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches, Seventh Edition
• Type: Assessment
• Validity: 2 years
• Renewal: Attend an NRASTC renewal course before expiry
