The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is the industry-standard lifeguard qualification awarded by Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK).
This intensive five-day course prepares you to supervise swimming pools safely and respond confidently to emergencies. Training covers pool rescue techniques, lifeguarding theory, CPR, and first aid, and is delivered by experienced Trainers and Assessors with real-world poolside expertise.

National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) Gen 10Β
RLSS UKβs* NPLQ is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK and Ireland. More than 40,000 lifeguards qualify with the RLSS UK every year, and there are currently more than 75,000 NPLQ-qualified lifeguardsΒ across the UK and Ireland.Β The NPLQ is also internationally recognised.Β
NPLQ Generation 10 is the latest edition of the NPLQ. It has endorsement against the CIMSPA Lifeguard Standard and meets the requirements within the Health and Safety Executiveβs Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools (HSG179). The NPLQ Gen 10 can be delivered with optional additional qualifications - AED, EFAW, FAW, and Anaphylaxis Management. The NPLQ is a great addition to any CV or higher education application, and from May 2024, NPLQ Gen 10 carries 8 UCAS Tariff points.Β

Lifeguard Course PrerequisitesΒ
Every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be 16 years old or above at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:Β
- Jump/dive into deep waterΒ
- Swim 50 metres in less than 60 secondsΒ
- Swim 100 metres continuously on front and backΒ
- In deep water, tread water for 30 secondsΒ
- Surface dive to the floor of the poolΒ
- Climb out unaided without a ladder/steps and where the pool design permits.Β

Entry Requirements
- 16+ on the final day of the course
- Swim 100m on front and back
- Confident in deep water
- Surface-dive to the deepest part of the pool (2.00m at this venue)
- Tread water for 30 seconds
- Climb out unaided (where venue design permits)
